ABOUT INTERNET CLASSES

Protocol:  The classes offered on this site are encoded in the RealNetworks G2 streaming audio and video protocols using equipment from ViewCast.com.

Tools:  For the best viewing experience, you need to have a current browser and the most current version of the RealNetworks G2 player.  This program has already verified that your browser is video-capable, if you have not reloaded your RealNetworks player in the past month, you should do so now (available free by clicking the icon).

Video on the Internet:  Finally, a few words of advice about using this leading-edge application.

  • The streaming video is designed to be viewed over a high speed telephone ISDN connection (56Kbps) or better. While you will be able to listen to the classes over lower-speed connections, you will find the bandwidth too low for continuous video.
  • If you have a high-speed connection and are having problems getting an acceptable video delivery rate over the Internet, you should look at the rate of packet loss. You can see this by selecting a class, positioning your cursor over the video display and depressing the right mouse button (MAC users must use the ALT/key combination.) Select the 'statistics' menu option, and view the 'packets' tab.   If the number of lost packets exceeds about 5%, your display and sound may be intermittent.  Bandwidth on the Internet is indeterminate; but loading is usually lighter in the early morning.   The classes are all recorded and are available shortly after their initial offering. You may enjoy your class more if you view it at a time when you can get a better connection.
  • If the color in the video looks patchy or strange, you may need to adjust the interface between RealPlayer and your video card.  You can do this  by selecting a class, positioning your cursor over the video display and depressing the right mouse button (MAC users must use the ALT/key combination.) Select the 'preferences' menu option, and view the 'performance' tab. Turn OFF the checkbox that reads 'optimized video display'.
  • Lastly, please be aware that there are significant differences between browser platforms. All browser companies are working to improve the capabilities of their products' video handling but some browsers are much more stable than others when delivering video. Generally, newer is better.  If you find that your system is locking up or crashing when displaying video, click here to download (free) the most recent version of your browser.   Worse case, you may wish to switch temporarily to a different browser when viewing video.
